Atkins Diet Plans Can Be Great But The Atkins Diet Plans & Are Lacking In Critical Areas

The atkins diet plans were created in the 70s by Dr Atkins. Atkins high protein diet is probably one of the most well-known and recognized low-carbohydrate, high protein diet plans.

The Atkins book 'Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution' is basically an updated version of his original dieting book. The diet plans have a lot of support worldwide as well as a lot of critics.

With the atkins high protein diet you are supposed to be able to eat all the protein and fat that you want to while at the same time achieving terrific weight loss results. When on it you just need to cut out the carbohydrates you would normally eat, or at least drastically reduce them, to become thin.

The atkins diet plans are basically the same as another popular dieting plan in which you focus on reducing the amount of carbohydrates and increasing protein intake.

In short diets like the atkins diet plans state that food such as pastas, potatoes and processed flours and sugars are out.

Diets like this also state that food such as fish, red meat, chicken etc. can be eaten in almost any quantity you like.

One of the biggest problems with it and any modified atkins diet is how difficult it actually is to be able to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet.

There are actually two problems with the diet but both are easily over-come. One problem is the lack of key nutrients for good health. So, while on the atkins diet plans take a very good multi vitamin / mineral supplement.

The problem with the lack of carbohydrates in atkins diet plans is more of a nuisance than an actual problem, and here's why.

There are carbohydrates in almost everything you find on grocery store shelves and especially in restaurants so it can be difficult for some to eliminate all carbohydrates while on the diet.

The good news is that it's not impossible and it can be very effective.

The atkins high protein diet will give you fairly quick and impressive weight loss results but you have to follow the diet properly and consistently, which means you need to closely watch what you are doing while on the diet.

"How Does The Atkins High Protein Diet Work?"

At the beginning there is an Induction Phase to help you put your body into ketosis where the body is tricked into thinking it is starving.

At this point you are to cut out all simple carbohydrates but are allowed to eat some green vegetables during the induction phase of the diet. Due to the low amount of carbohydrates in the atkins high protein diet your body will burn glycogen instead of its preferred source of energy glucose.

Any type of high protein and fatty food is ok during this phase. A lot of doctors say that ketosis is unhealthy because it can put a strain on your kidneys and may be fatal.

But please be aware, there is NO documented proof that indicates high amounts of protein or higher levels of protein intake in general lead to kidney malfunction in healthy people, no documented proof whatsoever.

After the initial couple of weeks on the diet you start to eat more carbohydrates until you stop losing weight.

Then you will know your carbohydrate limit in order to continue to lose weight effectively on the the atkins high protein diet.

"Atkins Diet Foods To Eat"

Here is a list of the atkins diet foods to eat in order to see the best results.

Atkins Diet Foods To Eat - Protein:
Most types of protein such as meat, seafood and eggs, are recommended. They have basically no carbohydrates at all. You can also take a low carbohydrate whey protein drink as well. Make sure however, that each serving has less than a couple grams of carbs.

Atkins Diet Foods To Eat - Vegetables:
Almost any types of vegetables will work. The majority of your carbohydrate intake while on the atkins diet plans will come from your veggies. Try to use high fiber vegetables.

Atkins Diet Foods To Eat - Cheese:
Most cheese only has a gram or less of carbs in each 1 ounce serving. But check the labels closely to make sure. The atkins diet plans allow around three to four ounces per day at the beginning. Cottage cheese however is not your best choice for this.

Atkins Diet Foods To Eat - Fats and Oils:
Now the atkins high protein diet is not a low fat diet. In fact, it is quite the opposite. A good amount of healthy fats is key to your success on this diet. It should include a balance of natural fats with absolutely no trans fats at all.

  • Eat cold-water fish which contain high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids.

  • Extra virgin olive oil is a good choice.

  • If you are stir-frying any meals use canola or peanut oil.

  • It is recommended to use only cold-pressed oils.

  • When it comes to mayonnaise you need the regular full-fat version because the low fat one has too many carbohydrates.

  • With salad dressings make sure there are no added sugars.

  • Butter is ok but only in moderation.

Atkins Diet Foods To Eat - Drinks:
Water is your preferred drink of choice. The rule here is to drink as much as you are comfortably able to do each day. Some diet soda is okay.

Fruit juice however is not allowed. Some herbal teas and decaffeinated coffee or tea can be taken.

"Should You Use The Atkins High Protein Diet?"

Well it actually works very well for most people when it comes to weight loss and you are allowed to eat as much protein and fat as you want.

There are some drawbacks, however but most of these are very easily overcome. And the benefits of the diet far outweigh any minor difficulties you may experience while on it.

First, for most people giving up or severely restricting carbohydrates such as potatoes, corn, bread, fruits and vegetables and much more while you are on the atkins diet plans is tough, but all it takes is a little will-power. You get adjusted very quickly, usually after the first week.

Since so many foods you are allowed to eat on atkins diet plans are high in animal protein they may also be high in saturated fat; which can concern some people.

"The Bottom Line On Atkins Diet Plans"

The atkins diet plans are highly recommended for weight loss as long as you do it right.

However, the number one complaint that doctors hear from their patients on the atkins diet plans, in fact is a lack of energy, or feeling of fatigue. This is considered to be the top problem but it's easy to overcome.

For all people on this diet it's indeed recommended to start taking a total balance health supplement.

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot get the proper nutrients your body needs to prevent a lack of energy or feeling of fatigue from the food that you eat each day while on the atkins diet plans.
