Infant insomnia is not much different than insomnia in adults. Many adults have problems getting to sleep each night as do many children. The differences are in causes of childhood insomnia and insomnia causes in adults.
Insomnia in adults is usually blamed on such things as stress, work, depression, jetlag, etc. As such, a lot of people simply don’t believe in insomnia and children.
Unfortunately, this just isn't a fact. Insomnia in teens and infants and children of all ages exists on a large scale. All children have varying sleeping patterns and sleep habits. The times they go to sleep vary greatly as well.
Most infants will sleep on average for about sixteen hours each day during the first few months after they're born. Infant insomnia is not necessarily present if a baby wakes up once or more each night. For the most part they will easily fall back asleep themselves.

When your infant gets to be about 12 months old, he or she will tend to get about sixteen hours of sleep over a 24 hr. period. This includes one or more naps during the day.

If your infant starts to cry during the night, don't rush in there right away. Usually an infant will stop crying without any intervention. If a bady gets attention at every crying session during the night it will tend to provide a reason to stay awake.
See if your infant is awake because of outside noise. If so, you can try playing soft music to cover up the other noises.
Don't punish children by making them go to bed after they have been misbehaving. This can be a cause of insomnia because instead of learning that sleep is a good thing, they will learn to dislike it.
Don't let your infant get used to falling asleep in your arms. Try to put them in their crib to fall asleep.
Some people believe that reading a book or singing a lullaby to a child can cause insomnia because they get used to a routine like this and if for whatever reason you can't do these things on certain nights, they will not be able to sleep.
Never give any child or infant medication to help a baby get to sleep unless your doctor tells you to.
Insomnia and children see to go hand-in-hand for many reasons but if your child suffers from insomnia night after night, you should see your doctor.

for that matter, are many but you as a parent need to realize that when it comes to your infant crying, you may have to leave them alone and not comfort them until they learn to go to sleep alone.
