Personal Training and the Senior Population

Three years ago, I had the opportunity to utilize my expertise as a certified personal trainer to train, assist, and share my knowledge of sports nutrition and the like to the senior population in Longboat Key, Florida.

I was truly amazed at how many of my clients need very few modifications in both strength training and cardiovascular activities. I accredit it to the longevity of years my clients have been working out and spending endless hours of practicing anti aging techniques and applied exercise activity throughout their daily living regime.

Most of my clients had an incredible amount of muscle tone, great range of motion, and could do an intense cardiovascular workout for 45 minutes or many times, longer.

Education was key for them because most found that stretching was NOT an important component before and after exercise. Using a massage table, I had done various stretches with my clients, where they found less tension and stress on their joints and muscles. They found less bouts with lower back pain, leg aches, and upper body distress in their muscles.

Also, I had the opportunity to teach them how to eat properly. Many people had the misconception that less is more. In the case of strength training and cardiovascular exercise, one must be sure they are taking in the correct amount of calories per day. I encourage my clients to eat 5-6 small meals a day. This will speed your metabolism and keep your insulin levels stable.

If practicing all three variables when working out, strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and proper eating habits, you will have success at any age! I believe it's a myth as one gets older they can't shape and tone up! I am a prime example of how at my age, 53, I have toned up my stomach muscles where I don't need plastic surgery. It works but, you must be patient and diligent!
