Recognizing insomnia causes can be a problem. The symptoms of insomnia can differ greatly from one person to the next. The vast majority of people, you included, will suffer from an occasional bout of insomnia or another sleep disorder, but what causes insomnia?

What makes a teenager suffer from the effects of insomnia can be very different from recognizing insomnia in someone who works nights or someone who travels a lot.

Insomnia in short, is the inability to have a sound or solid sleep, waking up frequently during the night or not being able to get to sleep at all. If you have any emotional problems such as a difficulty to control your temper, suffer from anxiety symptoms, etc. it will intensify your insomnia symptoms. It can even be the reason for your insomnia starting.

If you tend to drink an excessive amount of coffee or any other drink or food that contains caffeine, you will more than likely suffer from insomnia. The amount of caffeine contained in most products is enough to keep almost anybody awake for extra hours.

If you are a smoker you may not have trouble recognizing insomnia symptoms because the nicotine in cigarettes will only add to your insomnia problems.

Many different types of herbs or prescription medications can be what causes insomnia. Alcohol may cause you to initially feel somewhat drowsy but when it gets metabolized in your body you will feel fully awake.

Recognizing Insomnia Causes: Circadian rhythm changes.

Circadian rhythm is basically your internal body clock. If your internal body clock gets altered, the amount of sleep you normally get will be reduced.

Any disturbance of your internal body clock can be the result of staying up too late or getting up too early in the morning.

If you travel a lot to different time zones and suffer from jetlag your circadian rhythm will become disturbed. If you are a shift worker or a student that has to spend extra hours studying for exams, your circadian rhythm will also change.

Almost any change in your surrounding environment from changes in temperature to noise and bright lights can be what causes insomnia in your case.

If you regularly sleep in unfamiliar locations due to travel, you will also notice some insomnia side effects.

Health issues along the lines of diabetes, heart conditions, hyperthyroidism, stomach ulcers, etc. can be a cause of your particular sleep disorder. If you have asthma you may also notice insomnia because of being short of breath.

If you tend to exercise or get a lot of physical activity (other than sex) just before you go to sleep, you'll suffer from insomnia. Eating large meals of any type within an hour or so of going to bed can also cause this sleeping disorder.

This due to the fact that when your metabolism is active it will give your body signals to stay awake.

Studies have shown that as much as ninety percent of the adult population can suffer from insomnia at some point or another. The same studies on insomnia causes also show that as much as thirty percent of these individuals will suffer from severe insomnia.

Women can be at a higher risk for suffering from this sleep disorder for a number of reasons:

  • Pre-menstrual syndrome. This will disturb a womans sleep pattern because it can be accompanied with irritability, depression and/or anxiety.
  • Menopause may also change your sleep.
  • Being pregnancy will make insomnia more frequent.

People who are older also tend to suffer from insomnia more often.

There is a lot of information on what causes insomnia but as mentioned earlier it can be different for each person. You have to determine what is causing your insomnia in order to come up with the proper insomnia solution.
